I’m having a evil food craving tonight. It’s been forever since I gave up on red meat (beef), and because of that, I haven’t had a Philly Cheesesteak in for-freaking-ever! I love them. They are so tasty! Years ago, my then-boyfriend and I used to come home late at night from work, hit the 24hr Krauszer’s convenience store across the street from our apartment, and I’d get the most divine teriyaki cheesesteak ever. Then we’d go home, eat, and play video games until ridiculous hours of the morning.
Since giving up beef, I’ve seen them, and longed for them, but never gave in to temptation. I’ve dipped a toe into alternatives, like Chicken Cheesesteaks, and while on some levels and in some places it’s really good, it’s just not the same.
In my searches as of late, I’ve stumbled across a few alternatives that might help me satisfy my beefy craving, and most of them seem to involve substituting the beef for sliced portobello mushrooms. It sounds incredibly tasty, as I loooooove mushrooms in nearly all their forms! I’m looking forward to giving these recipe suggestions a try sometime in the near future. Until then, my cheesesteak daydreams will continue to torment me!
